Die Hard: Chimera Edition (side posts)
Location: Kally's Quarters
Timeline: Evening after Frenemies
Kally was humming happily to herself as she checked the countertop cooker she'd replicated. She knew cooking replicated ingredients was sometimes tricky, but so far things were coming out well, and her quarters smelled deliciously of rosemary. She briefly wondered if their guest would be surprised that when she offered dinner she did in fact mean food, but decided if he was it just meant she got to tease him about it when it came time for dessert.
She'd sent a message to Cally, telling her to shower and change into something flirty for dinner, choosing a short skirt and low-cut top for herself, and had just snuck a taste when the chime to her quarters sounded. "Come in!" she called.
Obliging, Remy stepped through the door, holding the bottle of Deltan wine he was carrying in both hands. It was replicated of course, but then he hadn't had the time to retrieve anything real since coming aboard. As it was after hours, he'd opted for a comfortable pair of jeans and a band tshirt - the Martian Mavens, a folk group fashionable about twenty years before, but with a small and dedicated fanbase.
'Hey there,' he called out, catching Kally in her outfit at the countertop. 'Smell's delicious.'
Kally looked over and smiled. "Hey, Remy, please come in," she said.
'Thank you.' He looked around, admiring what she had done with the place. Most intrigued by her cooking set-up he sauntered over, placed the wine on the countertop. 'Took the liberty of bringing something. It's replicated. If I knew you were going to cook cook, I'd have tried to bring something real.'
"Oh that's fine, everything I'm cook cooking is replicated as well. I just like the fun of cooking and the smell of it." She looked at his shirt and grinned. "Oh, good choice. My Aunt loves them. I think she dated one for a year or so, if I recall, while she was traveling with them."
'Your aunt dated one of them? And travelled with them?' Boudreau shook his head and smiled ruefully. 'I guess I know where the wild stories came from. Damn, I woulda loved to have been able to travel with them in their prime. They got into so many things. That bit on Bolarus. Just ... too much to read ya know?' he finished with a chuckle. 'They're a good band. Gotten me through some rough patches.'
"Yes, she is the origin of many wild stories," Kally said. "She told me one about some concert they were hired for. It was on Aurellus II, but they got there, found out it was an Orion planet. Evidently their agent mixed up Aurellus II and Argos II. The Orions were not happy to have strangers there, but apparently she charmed a few of them and talked them into letting the band perform. Wound up being a recurring gig for about four months straight as I recall." She chuckled as she pulled a few glasses out, along with an unmarked bottle of clear liquid. She poured a couple fingers into each and handed him one. "So, you've met the captain." It wasn't a question.
'I have,' Boudreau accepted the glass and held it lightly as he talked. A puzzled look crossed his expression. 'How'd you know?'
"You had a slight trace of her perfume on you," she said, smirking. "She's the only one on the ship who wears it. I guess my question is, how'd it rub off on you?" She winked at him and clinked her glass with his.
'Oh. Uh, well.' Boudreau cleared his throat, 'she was trying on a dress, and then one thing after another she ended up in my lap giving me my welcome to the Chimera.' He smiled sheepishly, 'and that's that. Nothing more happened. She wished me on my merry way to report to Medical, and you know what happened there.'
"Yes I do," she purred, smiling at him. "So what made you decide to owe her one later rather than taking her up on it then?" She skewered him with a look.
'I ... well, look I didn't want to be know as the guy who boinked the Captain,' Boudreau said, running his hand through his hair nervously. 'I'd not even been cleared for duty, formally and there she goes wearing some neon-blue underoos and being all seductive. What if it was a test? Fall at the first hurdle and bam, chance to work with a scientist who's seen a subspace anomaly up close and lived to tell the tale.'
Kally blinked and then downed the rest of her vodka before putting her glass down. "Okay, I'll be honest, I was going to tease you about this, but honestly? Becca is going to be so flattered. You managed to resist the irresistible, just to make sure you met her? That is impressive." She grinned playfully. "Of course, that means that Cally is most likely disappointed, not to mention frustrated at being all ready to welcome you aboard and not having the chance," she said teasingly. "And she's going to be absolutely jealous when she finds out I got to welcome you first. So, question is, if you could have a second shot, would you take it?"
'Huh, that was a genuine come on from the Captain?' Boudreau asked rhetorically, swirling the liquid in his glass as he thought. A sudden, intense flashback to Cally straddling him, the scent and heat of her, and his involuntary checking her out crossed his mind. 'I ... yes, I think I would. If there were a second chance,' he said. 'Women in my experience don't often enjoy being jilted.'
"True, we do not," Kally said. "Fortunately for you, she is a big believer in second chances, even if it's first impressions. I also happen to know that she--" she paused as the doors to her quarters opened and she looked past him, brightening. "Privet, milaya! she said, happily, rushing over to give Cally a kiss and a hug.
"Privet Solnyshko!" Cally hoped that she was pronouncing it correctly, as she kissed Kally having only practiced a few times. Few... DOZEN... Times. She'd been told something flirty, so the mini-dress she wore went halfway down her thighs and showed a large amount of cleavage in the extremely deep cut front that ended an inch above her navel, enough to verify very clearly she wasn't wearing a bra. The straps that crossed her shoulders and across her back were barely there, but clearly able to hold the dark green dress on her.
Turning to see who was coming through the door, Remy almost spilled his drink. He shot Kally a look. He realised she hadn't been quite forthcoming about who her girlfriend was. Not that he was about to complain. From his limited interactions with them both, they seemed to suit each other. And were happy together.
Calypso's eyes were drawn to the noise of someone nearly fumbling a glass and a smile crossed her face as she recognized the Southerner from before, Remy wasn't it? "I don't recall you saying that we were having company over for dinner, what brought this on?" Her voice was more of a purr than anything.
"Well, Remy was lamenting to me about how he wasn't able to take you up on your welcome properly," Kally said, smoothly, putting an arm around Cally's waist and walking her over to the dining area. "Evidently, he was so excited to meet our little Rebecca, that he was worried he'd offend you and risk his position here, is that not so sweet?" She grinned at him. "However, he feels just awful about it, and has promised to make it up to you with multiple apologies." She snickered and leaned up to kiss Cally again before going to check on the food.
"I'm sure..." Cally's eyes glittered as she perused Remy and sauntered the last few steps over to the table, taking one of the chairs and dragging it closer to him and sitting on it in reverse and then crossing her arms across the back of it, "And just what is my dearest pirozhki actually not telling me?" She said in a low tone to him, obviously trying to prevent Kally from getting the first word in, "She's being awfully um... Flattering about it all."
'No ... that's the, uh, the whole truth of it Ma'am,' Boudreau smiled sheepishly. 'I thought it was some kind of test. After all, I did say it's not the way I normally get greeted on a new assignment.' He sighed quietly. 'You did read my mind at the time and saw what I wanted. I apologise if I offended.'
"Don't worry," Kally said. "Cally is very forgiving," she gave Cally a pointed look, then turned back to Remy. "Now, if you'll be good enough to pour us each some wine, we'll get dinner started." She leaned over and kissed Cally sweetly and winked at her. "Might want to turn and face the table."
Nodding, Remy grabbed the bottle of wine and began pouring a decent measure of drink into each glass. Flashing a smile at Cally, he placed a glass in front of her on the table. 'Captain,' he said with a flash of a smile.
Calypso reached out to take her glass, intentionally making contact with his hand before he could withdraw it. "Well, then... I look forward to whatever plans either of you have planned for us tonight.
Kally pulled the top off the cooker and transferred the roast chicken quarters she'd been making to a platter, and then vegetables and potatoes to their respective bowls. She brought the sides over and set them down with serving spoons, then brought over the chicken. "So, Remy," she said, grinning, "would you like to try a breast or a thigh?"
He smirked in return. 'Depends where the most meat is,' Remy said, eyeing them over, 'I'm a firm believer in more being the ideal for both.'
"Oh, you're good..." Cally said as she watched him, glancing back over to Kally, "You know me, sweetie, I'll take a thigh, I always enjoy the meat lower on the body more."
Kally grinned and passed out the protein, before serving herself and sitting down, passing the sides. "So, Remy, since we didn't have much opportunity to talk earlier, tell us about yourself."
Raising an eyebrow, Boudreau conceded they had been rather occupied previously. 'Well, what's there to say, really? Earth-born and raised in Louisiana. Spent a lot of time out in the countryside, hunting, kayaking, hiking, that sort of stuff. Still really into physical exertions now,' he said with a wink at Kally, before ploughing on, 'found I liked the natural sciences so pursued them at the Academy.' He left out the fact that it was cryptids, and bigfoot in particular, that has inspired his love of science. 'They were kind enough to allow me to get on straight to a PhD track once I was done, and assigned me Science Officer Posts across the Quadrant. I've spent time on research bases, starships, canoes, you name it. And I volunteered for a transfer here as you know.'
He leant back in his chair, helping himself to the food on his plate, then asked. 'Any questions you'd like to ask?'
Kally chewed thoughtfully. "What led you to science?" she said.
'Well ... my dad would take me out on the bayou and we'd fish, so there was some direct experience of wildlife. My mother, well, she'd share all sorts of folktales about strange animals that ranged the Appalachians and it seemed exciting. What if I was the one to confirm they were real?' Boudreau shook his head and chuckled, 'most none of them are real, it turns out, but it put me on a good path.'
"Quite the jump from imaginary animals to spatial anomalies," Kally observed.
He pulled a face. 'Imaginary' and 'folkloric' were two different things in his mind, but perhaps he was being a little sensitive. 'Yes, there's a leap - but that's only half the experience I had, remember? I learnt a lot about how the natural world worked from my dad too, just in a different, more practical way through hunting and fishing for food. When we got to the crunchier end of physics and chemistry in high school, that hit me in a different way. Think of it as the maths being a unifying way to look at our reality.'
"You may find a kindred spirit in the Science department... Our local anthropologic expert, Ensign Vaux," She shared a wink with Kally, "Has a lot of knowledge in that area, across many world. Of course, I do want to ask you what specifically brought you here? You say subspace anomalies, but there are anomalies throughout all the Federation, PLUS you volunteered, even fought for this assignment... Why?"
'Are these the questions you were too busy getting in my pants to ask earlier?' Boudreau flashed a grin, and spun the wine in his glass, letting it create a little vortex before he took another sip. 'Our Chief Science Officer,' he said simply. 'You know how rare it is that someone survives a subspace anomaly like that? There are anomalies across the Federation, of course there are,' he drawled. 'But the Chimera has the anomaly in Lieutenant McMillen. Plus we're at the limits of the Federation here as well. More chance we can catch something new. Put someone's name to the discovery, you know?'
Kally glanced at Cally. "Well, I don't know if we'll ever make the history books, but you're right that you have a fantastic department head, who will definitely have unique first-hand knowledge of subspace anomalies." She finished her plate and pushed it aside. "Just wouldn't go referring to her as 'the anomaly' within earshot." She gave him a wink.
'No ma'am, I won't be calling anyone 'the anomaly' if I can handle it,' he shrugged and chuckled, 'well. Unless they behave in an anomalous way of course.' Boudreau settled to his food, enjoying what had been put in front of him immensely. 'So ... he said after a bite. 'You two are an item?'
Calypso snickered, "You could say that. Of course, you could also say that we're also an item with a not insignificant percentage of the crew as well, but strictly speaking?" She smiled over at Kally, "We are girlfriends."
Kally beamed back at her and blew her a kiss. "It's a relationship that's a bit unconventional, but, then again, so are we. But it works for us, and it allows us to continue to foster good relations among the crew." She gave him a cheeky grin.
He was polite enough to blush. 'Yes ... I think I've already said my welcome was ... unusual in its warmth.' He shot a glance over at Kally, 'though it was a little mean of you not to mention the Captain was your paramour, no?'
Kally put on a look of innocent contrition. "You're right," she said. "Even though the look on your face was even better than I'd hoped for, it was mean, and I do apologize." She brightened as she smiled at him again. "So we'll have to make it up to you with dessert."
'Oh, I'm a fan of humble pie for dessert,' Remy replied with a wide smile, 'goes well with custard I reckon.'
Kally stood up and walked over to her kitchen, pulling a small container out of her cooler unit. She walked back over and placed the tall, cylindrical dispenser in front of him, the nozzle pointed up at him like it was looking at him. "I hope you don't mind milk chocolate as opposed to something darker," Kally said.
'Chocolate sauce?' Remy looked at the cylinder greedily, then at the refrigerator unit. 'I suppose if you have a good vanilla ice-cream over there, it could go well ...'
Both women smiled at him as Cally stood up from the table as well. "Who said anything about ice cream?" they said together, turning and walking towards Kally's bedroom.
'Huh,' Remy exclaimed as he was left sat, looking at the door closing behind the two women. He put his napkin carefully on the table, and got to his feet. Making his way to the door, he sighed, 'when in Rome I suppose ...' The man was seriously questioning how warn out he'd be by the end of his first week aboard.
